Walt Ashbaugh won the AAU triple jump in 1952, and finished third in the Olympic Trials that year to make the Olympic team. Running for Cornell he finished fourth in the 120 yard hurdles at the 1951 NCAA meet. He later competed for the US Army. While at Cornell he won the high hurdles at the Heptagonals in 1949-50, and helped the school win the shuttle relay title at the 1951 Penn Relays. Ashbaugh also played basketball at Cornell, leading them during their 1950-51 season, which finished with a 20-5 record, the best in Cornell history. Ashbaugh was inducted into the Cornell Athletics Hall of Fame in 1981.
