Herb Barten was the AAU 800 champion in 1948 and runner-up in 1949. He ran for the University of Michigan, and won five individual Big Ten championships from 1946-49 as a middle-distance runner. Barten finished fourth in the 1948 Olympic 800 metre race. He retired after that race and eventually settled in South Carolina.
