Originally from Maine, Bruce Bickford attended college at Northeastern University in Boston. He ran the 10K for the US at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, placing 18th. In 1987 Bickford won the gold medal in the 10,000 at the Pan American Games. He was US Champion in the 10K in 1985 in addition to winning the 1988 Olympic Trials. He also won a gold medal in the half-marathon at the 1989 US Olympic Festival.
Bickford is a member of the Northeastern University Athletics Hall of Fame, elected in 1991. He is also a member of the Maine Running Hall of Fame and the Maine Sports Hall of Fame.
