Biography

Brian Blutreich was a discus thrower who competed for the United States at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. Blutreich attended UCLA from 1986-90, earning All-America honors three times each in the discus and shot put. He was Pac-10 Champion in the discus in 1989-90, and helped UCLA win two NCAA Championships and three Pac-10 team championships. In addition to the Olympics, Blutreich competed at the 1991 World University Games.

Blutreich then entered coaching, serving for 12 years as an assistant head coach in charge of throws at the University of North Carolina. He was then at the University of Oklahoma coaching the throwers, before taking over as throwing coach at Arizona State University. At all three schools, Blutreich has coached multiple conference champions and All-American throwers. He has twice earned National Assistant Coach of the Year honors. He was also the men’s throws coach for the 2002 World Junior Championships. Blutreich married the former Lynda Lipson, who was a three-time US Champion in the javelin throw and competed at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.
