Bryan Bronson was first noticed in 1991 when he won the Pan American Junior Championship in the 200 metres, and was later named Track & Field News high school athlete of the year. Bronson attended Rice University, where he began to specialize in the 400 hurdles, winning the 1993 NCAA outdoors. He won a bronze medal in the event at the 1997 World Championships and was the 1998 Goodwill Games Champion. Bronson won the US title in the 400 hurdles in 1996-98, qualifying for the 1996 Olympics with his first victory. His 47.03 personal best, set in winning the 1998 US title, was still the #4 mark all-time as of January 2018. In 1999 Bronson was banned after he tested positive for performance enhancing drugs. He served a 2-year suspension, and then returned to competition, but never returned to the same level after missing those two years.
