David Caldwell ran for the University of Massachusetts, Cornell, and later the Boston AA. He was AAU indoor 1,000 yard champion in 1915. Outdoors, he placed second the AAU 880y in 1912 and third in 1915, and won the 1914 IC4A title at 880y. Caldwell became a farmer in northeastern Massachusetts, although he also served as the postmaster for the small town of South Byfield. He was also a volunteer track coach at the nearby Governor Dummer Academy.
