Tonie Campbell ran the high hurdles at the 1984 and 1988 Olympics, winning a bronze medal in 1988. He also qualified for the ill-fated 1980 US Olympic team while he was a student at Southern Cal. He finished third at the 1980 Olympic Trials, trailing the redoubtable leader Renaldo Nehemiah, and also placed fourth that year at the NCAA Meet. Campbell finished third in the 1980 Liberty Bell Games in Philadelphia, held as a replacement track meet for boycotting nations.
Campbell was US Champion in the 110 hurdles in 1985. He won the 1987 World Indoor title in the 60 metre hurdles and won the 1985 World Cup in the 110 highs. Campbell had a long consistent career, ranking in the world top 10 every year from 1980-90, with a high ranking of #2 in 1987, and he was #3 in 1984, 1988, and 1989.
Personal Best: 110H – 13.17 (1988).
