Howard Cann competed in the shot put for the US at the 1920 Olympics, but he was far better known as a basketball player. He started college at Dartmouth, but later played for NYU and the New York AC. In 1920 he led NYU to the AAU National Championship and was voted player of the year by the Helms Athletic Foundation. He later coached the NYU basketball team from 1923-58. As coach, he led NYU to the final game of the 1945 NCAA tournament, and the 1947 NIT tournament, but they lost both games in the finals. In the days prior to national collegiate tournaments, Cann led NYU to an undefeated season in 1933-34. In 1968, Howard Cann was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame. His brother, Ted Cann, was a world-class swimmer who set a world record in the 220 yard freestyle, and earned the Congressional Medal of Honor for his heroism in World War I.
