When the 1900 U.S. Olympic team stopped over in London en route to Paris, Meredith Colket finished second to Bascom Johnson, a fellow student at Penn, in the pole vault at the British AAA championships. Colket then placed second in the Olympic pole vault to another Pennsylvanian, Irving Baxter. Colket was better known athletically as a tennis player – he lettered for Penn for four years, was runner-up in the 1903 intercollegiate doubles championship, and later captained the Merion Cricket Club tennis team. He worked as an attorney in Philadelphia throughout his life.
