Brian Crouser twice threw the javelin for the US at the Olympics, in 1988 and 1992. An all-around thrower as a youth, Crouser won state high school titles in the shot put, discus throw, and javelin. He attended the University of Oregon where he won the NCAA title as a freshman (1982) and again as a senior (1985). In 1986 Crouser was diagnosed with cancer but overcame that and was given a cancer-free diagnosis after several months of treatment. In March 1986, one month before his cancer diagnosis, and shortly after new javelin specifications came out, Crouser threw 79.86 m, which was briefly a world record with the new implement.
