Ira Davis competed at La Salle University. He had starred in both basketball and track at Overbrook High School in Philadelphia, where his teammate was Wilt Chamberlain. Davis was a good sprinter, winning the 100 yard dash at the 1958 IC4As and the Penn Relays. Davis won the AAU triple jump in 1958-60, and was second in 1964. Davis won the US Olympic Trials in the triple jump in 1956, 1960, and 1964. In addition to his three Olympic appearances, he also finished seventh in the triple jump in the 1959 Pan American Games.
