John Eller was a five-time AAU champion in the 220 yard low hurdles – 1907-08, and 1910-12, and also finished second in the AAU 110 hurdles in 1906, 1908, and 1910. He also won the AAU indoor hurdles in 1911 and 1916. In the era before officially recognized world records, Eller is credited with three unofficial world records in the 220 hurdles – in 1907, 1908, and 1911. He was one of four brothers, all of whom were very good athletes. Eller worked for the New York Police Department as an officer and also as a detective.
