Biography

Frank Foss of Cornell and the Chicago AA was the first man to win an Olympic pole vault gold medal with a new world record. At Antwerp he cleared 13-5 (4.09) to beat the unofficial world record of 13-3½ (4.05), which Foss had himself set the previous year. Foss also shared the 1915 IC4A title, won it outright in 1916, and was AAU champion in both 1919 and 1920.
