John Fuhrer

John Fuhrer competed for the Milwaukee AC in the triple jump at the 1904 Olympics. He was also entered for the high jump, his best event. Fuhrer attended Doane College in Crete, Nebraska and later became the football coach and athletic director at Doane (1904-07) with a record of 13-11-0. In 1971 a gymnasium at Doane was named in his honor, and at 91-years-old, he was able to be present at the dedication ceremony. After coaching at Doane Fuhrer coached Pittsburg State College in Pittsburgh, Kansas from 1909-14 and 1918, finishing with a record of 26-22-2. In a 1913 game against Southwestern College, Fuhrer is known to have protested against Southwestern’s playing an African-American player.
