Robert Gary ran the steeplechase for the United States at both the 1996 and 2004 Olympics. He was twice a runner-up in the steeple at the USA Nationals (1996, 1999), and twice finished third (2003, 2004). Gary attended The Ohio State University, receiving a degree in English education in 1996, and winning the 1994 Big 10 Championship in the steeplechase.
Gary later became the Buckeyes cross-country coach and assistant track coach in charge of distances. In 2004 he was named head track coach at Ohio State, serving in that role through 2012, when he moved to Furman University. He was also the men’s distance coach for the USA at the 2012 World Championships. Gary was an All-State soccer (football) player in high school before turning to running full time.
