Walter Gegan ran the steeplechase at the 1928 Olympics, having moved up from the 400 hurdles. In that event, at the AAUs, he finished fourth in 1922 and 1926 and fifth in 1925. He was fourth in the steeplechase at the 1928 AAU Meet, which doubled as the Olympic Trials that year, and qualified him for the Olympic team. Gegan was looking to make the 1932 Olympic team, but in December 1931, he developed a carbuncle on his neck and after an operation, died from sepsis.
