Biography

Richard George was a javelin thrower for BYU. He placed only fifth in the 1975 NCAA, but fared better at the AAUs, winning in 1975, placing second in 1976, and finishing fourth in 1977. At Millard High School in Utah George had thrown the javelin and discus, but also played basketball and football. He played freshman football at BYU, but then went on a Mormon mission and on his return to school, concentrated on the javelin. He was Western Athletic Conference champion in his final three years of school, and was a three-time All-American at BYU.

George graduated in 1977 with a degree in economics. He then attended graduate school at Harvard, earning a masters’ degree, and started a biotech company that developed drugs for cancer and autoimmune disease. George was inducted into the Utah Sports Hall of Fame in 2016.
