Glenn Graham of Cal Tech lost the Olympic pole vault after a jump-off with his fellow Californian, the 18-year-old schoolboy, Lee Barnes. His son, Jim Graham, made the 1956 U.S. Olympic team, also as a pole vaulter, but in a show of great magnanimity, relinquished his spot to Bob Gutowski who, as the Games approached, showed better form than Graham.
