Biography

Although Dave Hall never won a national title, he was an outstanding performer at the New England Championships, winning the one mile twice, the 10 miles four times, and setting a new half-mile record. Hall, the first Olympian from Brown, was the fastest of the heat winners in the 1900 800m. In the final he was lying second at the halfway mark, at which point he lost a shoe; despite this handicap, he finished third while retaining the Olympic record – the final was won in 2:01.2 compared with Hall’s time of 1:59.0 in the first heat. After graduating from Brown, David Hall took his Sc.M. from the University of Chicago in 1903 and his M.D. from Rush Medical College in 1907. He taught at the University of Oklahoma for two years and then went to the University of Washington as Professor of Hygiene. In 1918 he was a colonel in charge of the ambulance troops on the Italian front and was honored by the King of Italy for his services. Dr. Hall then returned to Washington and retired in 1947 after 39 years at the University.

Personal Best: 800 – 1:59.0 (1900); 1500 - 4.09.2e (1900).
