Biography

Tranel Hawkins burst onto the scene in 1984 to make the US Olympic team in the 400 hurdles. Hawkins ran in college for Angelo State College, winning the 400 hurdles the NCAA D-2 meet in 1983-84. He was twice Lone Star Conference Champion. He was world ranked three times in the top 10 between 1984-87.

Hawkins went to college to play basketball, starting as a hoopster at South Plains Junior College, but then discovered track and the hurdles. He was in only his second year of running the hurdles when he made the Olympic team. Hawkins had little experience that year but great things were expected of him, only to see the hopes derailed by injuries. He later worked for Hewlett-Packard and then for technology companies in the Bay Area of San Francisco.

Personal Bests: 400 – 45.94 (1987); 400H – 48.28 (1984).
