Competing for the US in international matches against the British Empire team, Chuck Hornbostel twice ran on world-record setting relay teams on the same day – 15 August 1936 – in the 4×880 y (with Bob Young, Harry Williamson, and John Woodruff) and the 4×Mile relay (with Gene Venzke, Archie San Romani, and Glenn Cunningham). Running for Indiana University, Hornbostel was NCAA 800/880 y champion from 1932-34. He never won an outdoor AAU title but in the 800 was second in 1932-33, and third in 1934 and 1936, and he was AAU indoor champion over 1,000 yards in 1934 and 1936. Hornbostel won four titles at the Millrose Games, winning the 1,000 metres/yards in 1933-35, and setting a world record to win the 600 yards in 1935.
