After winning the Big Ten championship in 1908 with a career best of 12-4 (3.76), Clare Jacobs was in a three-way tie for third at the London Olympics. Jacobs, who attended both Albion College and the University of Chicago, twice set world indoor records and had a best indoor vault of 12-3. Later in life he became an avid sailor and once won the Mackinac Race. He formed the F. L. Jacobs Company, automotive suppliers in SouthField, Michigan, and ran that company until his retirement.
