John Joyce, originally from Moycullen (Maigh Cuilinn), County Galway in Ireland, came to America in 1900 and was AAU 5-mile champion in 1904, competing for the Irish-American AC. He also won the AAU title indoors for 10-miles in 1903-05, and was AAU Cross-Country Champion in 1902. Joyce was a bricklayer by trade, and later a saloon owner in New Rochelle, New York. He eventually moved to a farm in Montgomery, New York, where he lived for the remainder of his life until his death in 1957.
