At the IC4A 120 yard hurdles, William Lewis finished third in the 1899 and fourth in 1900, running for Syracuse. At the 1900 Olympics, he qualified for the final of the 400 hurdles but did not compete, most likely because the event was held on Sunday. Lewis later worked as a sales manager for Fisk Manufacturing in Canandaigua, New York. Lewis married four times, with his first two wives dying very young. He had one child, a boy by his first wife, Cora.
