Mike Manley was 1969 AAU steeplechase champion and won the steeplechase at both the 1971 and 1975 Pan American Games. Manley’s other AAU finishes in the steeple included second in 1971, third in 1966 and 1974, fourth in 1968, and fifth in 1965. He competed for the University of Wisconsin, the Oregon TC, and the Southern Cal Striders. Manley was ranked in the US top 10 eight times between 1964-75, ranking #1 in 1969 and 1972, #2 in 1971, and #3 in 1966, 1974, and 1975.
After graduating from Wisconsin, Manley served with the US Marines in Vietnam He continued to run as he got older and was the first American master to break 30 minutes for the 10-K and 2-20 for the marathon, both in 1982. He was later a high school teacher and coached runners on a free-lance basis.
Personal Bests: Mile – 4:01.4 (1974); 2 miles – 8:34.8 (1972); 5000 – 13:42.4 (1976); 10000 – 29:10.0 (1976); Mar – 2-14:43 (1980); 3000S – 8:27.6 (1971).
