Pete McArdle

Pete McArdle was a distance runner and marathoner for the New York AC. Although Irish-born he became an American citizen in 1962. He won 16 different AAU championships, including the 1962 cross-country and the 1963-64 6-mile/10K titles. In the 1963 Pan American Games he won gold in the 10000 metres and bronze in the marathon. He did not qualify for the 1960 Olympics 10000 metres when he finished fourth in the Final Trials. At the 1964 Final Trials he again failed to qualify for the 10000 metres after finishing sixth, but won the marathon to go to the Tokyo Olympics. He never ran the Boston Marathon.

McArdle was inducted into the Road Runners Club of America Hall of Fame in 1973. He worked as a mechanic for a bus company. McArdle died when he collapsed during a training run in Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, NY.
