Javier Montez finished third in the 1952 AAU 1,500 metres. He competed for Texas Western (now UTEP) and the San Antonio AC. Montez set meet records for the mile at the Border Conference Meet, the Texas Relays, and the NAIA meet. In 1952 Montez won three titles (880, mile, 2-miles) at the Border Conference Meet.
