Jesse Montgomery finished second in the 1928 AAU steeplechase, which doubled that year as the Olympic Trials. He started college at Franklin and Marshall but transferred to Penn after his sophomore year. After college he spent time as a mathematics and science teacher. In World War II he served in the US Navy, becoming a lieutenant commander. He later studied organic chemistry and worked in the oil industry for Mobil.
