In 1983 at the Pepsi Invitational in Westwood, California, Tom Petranoff threw the javelin 99.72 to break the world record (with the old javelin). Petranoff was TAC champion in 1985-86. He competed twice at the World Championships, finishing second in 1983 and fourth in 1987. He also finished third at the 1985 World Cup. Petranoff controversially moved to South Africa in the 80s and competed internationally for that country for a time. He later became a coach, briefly at Boston University.
