Hermon Phillips won the AAU 440y in 1927 and was NCAA champion for Butler College from 1925-27 in the 440y. He later competed for the Illinois AC, and then became a coach, first at Butler from 1927-37 and then at Purdue from 1937-45. He went on to establish and direct several summer camps for boys and girls.
