While at Long Beach State, John Rambo won the 1964 NCAA high jump and later won the AAU indoor title in 1967 and 1969. After graduation he represented the Southern Cal Striders and came close to making the Olympic team for a second time when he tied for fourth place at the 1968 Final Trials.
In 1965, Rambo was drafted in the sixth round by the St. Louis Hawks of the NBA, but never actually played pro basketball. He had played basketball at Long Beach State, making California Collegiate Athletic Association all-conference in 1964 and 1965, while he averaged 20.3 points/game and 12.7 rebounds/game. After his sports career ended, Rambo became an executive in public relations with GTE. In 1986 Rambo was inducted into the California State University, Long Beach, Sports Hall of Fame, while in 2002, he was inducted into the Long Beach City College Hall of Champions.
