Fred Schule

Having won the AAU high hurdles in 1903, Fred Schule took the Olympic gold the following year. Schule won the Big 10 Championship in the long jump in 1900 and 1901 while a student at the University of Wisconsin. Schule worked as a bacteriologist for the Chicago Sanitary District for five months, and then returned to the University of Wisconsin for post graduate studies in bacteriology. From 1902 to 1903, he taught physics at a high school in Wausau, Wisconsin, and then went to the University of Michigan where he earned a masters’ degree in chemistry in 1904. While at Michigan he played on the football team and ran track, winning the high hurdles at the 1904 Penn Relays.

Schule later became a chemist, working for several chemical firms in Utah in 1904-05. In 1905 he was director of the gymnasium at the University of Montana and served as head football coach there from 1905-06 and head basketball coach from 1905-07. Schule later returned to chemistry, working for Kentucky Laboratories, Norwich Pharmacy, and Bristol Laboratories. He had various jobs throughout his life, working as a shoe merchant, a high school teacher, an engineer with Westinghouse Lamp, and a stock speculator. In 2008, Schule was posthumously inducted into the University of Michigan Track & Field Hall of Fame.
