After placing third in the 120y hurdles at the 1906 IC4A meet, Art Shaw of Dartmouth finished as runner-up in 1907 and then became the IC4A champion in 1908. He also won the AAU title in 1908, equalling the world record of 15.2. Then, in the Olympic final, in which Shaw placed third, Forrest Smithson set a new world record of 15.0, but Shaw equalled this time after his return home to again become co-holder of the world record.
