Before graduating from Yale, Lewis Sheldon won the IC4A long jump in 1895 and 1896 although he did not compete in this event at the 1900 Olympics. In 1896, representing the New York AC, he also won the AAU All-Around title. In 1906 he went to London as a representative for financial institutions. This led to many official connections with European governments and he later received official decorations from the governments of France, Italy and Finland. He left France during World War II, but returned to his Biarritz estate after the German occupation ended.
