Mike Shine, a senior at Penn State, was a surprise silver medalist in the 400m hurdles at the Montréal Olympics. This matched Shine’s highest placing at any major championship. He finished second at the 1976 NCAA, but never placed better than fourth at the AAU meet. After the Olympics, Shine went into the service, but returned to Penn State for a graduate degree, during which time he served as assistant track coach.
