Phil Shinnick

Phil Shinnick placed third in the 1964 NCAA long jump, and was also sixth in 1963. He competed for the University of Washington and later the US Air Force. At the 1963 Modesto Relays, Shinnick jumped 8.33 (27-4), which defeated Ralph Boston and bettered the listed world record of 8.31, but no wind reading was recorded on the jump, and it could not be submitted as a world record. Some observers and reports in Track & Field News felt that the jump was likely wind-aided. In 2003, after Shinnick lobbied for several years, it was belatedly recognized as an American record by USA Track & Field. It was not recognized as a world record by the IAAF / WA for many years, but the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ruled in May 2021 that it should be recognized as a world record.
