Running for Cornell, Walker Smith was IC4A champion in 1919 over both the 120 yard high hurdles and the 220 yard low hurdles. In 1918, he was second in both events, and in 1920, he was runner-up in the highs and placed third in the lows. At the AAUs, he was third in 1918 and 1920 in the high hurdles, and third in the 1918 low hurdles, competing for the Chicago AA. Smith competed with an artificial right eye.
