William Spencer won the AAU steeplechase in 1928. That meet also doubled as the 1928 US Olympic Trials and put him on the team for Amsterdam. His winning time in the race, 9:35.8, was also an American record. At the 1924 Olympic Trials, Spencer finished third in the 1,500 to make the Paris team. Spencer competed for Mississippi State University and the Chicago AA.
