James Stewart placed second in the AAU decathlon in 1928 and 1930 and was fourth in 1927. He competed for Southern Cal, the Hollywood AC, and the Los Angeles AC. He twice won the Southern Pacific AAU Meet, in 1928 and 1932.
Stewart attempted to make the 1932 Olympic Team, but did not finish at the Western Olympic Trials. He also tried to make the 1932 team as a high jumper, but finished tied for 11th at the Final Trials.
