Herman Stokes placed in the top five at the AAU triple jump every year from 1957-63, with best finishes of second in 1959 and 1962, and third in 1958. Stokes won a silver medal in 1959 in the Pan American Games triple jump and also competed in the Pan-Ams in 1963, placing fourth. Stokes attended San Jose State University and later represented the Southern Cal Striders. He later worked as a postal clerk.
