Mike Tully was the top American pole vaulter of the late 1970s and early 1980s. He was World Cup Champion in 1977 and 1979, when that meet was a surrogate for the World Championships. He won gold at the 1983 and 1987 Pan American Games, in addition to his 1984 Olympic silver medal.
Tully vaulted in college at UCLA, winning the 1978 NCAA title. He was US Champion in 1977, 1979, and 1986. He set two world indoor records in January and March of 1978, and in 1984, set three American records (outdoors).
