Tony Watson won the 1962 NCAA long jump for Oklahoma. In the AAU long jump he was third in 1960 and second in 1961. He placed second at the 1960 Olympic Trials, behind Ralph Boston.
After finishing his track career Watson transferred to Central Oklahoma, where he earned his degree in political science. He then studied at Columbia’s School of Public Health, Penn’s Wharton School of Business, and Cornell’s executive development program. His goal was a career in public health, and Watson eventually became chairman and chief executive officer of EmblemHealth, a large health insurance company, and then became CEO of Health Insurance Plan of Greater New York.
