After a series of jump-offs, Lou Wilkins of the University of Chicago was finally awarded third place in the 1904 Olympic pole vault. Earlier in the season, the 1904 AAU championships had also been held in St. Louis and Wilkins lost the title to H. L. Gardner, again after a jump-off.
