Larry Young was America’s most successful international walker. In addition to his two Olympic medals, he placed 10th in the Olympic 20km walk in 1972. At the Pan American Games he won gold at 50 km. in 1967 and 1971 and bronze at 20 km. in 1975. After enlisting in the navy out of high school, Larry Young attended Columbia College (Missouri) on the only race-walking scholarship ever given in the United States. He later became a metal sculptor.
