Frank Zuna was of Bohemian ancestry and made his living as a plumber. Zuna was a soldier in World War I, serving in the 2nd Pioneer Infantry. After the war he won a Christmas cross-country race in Paris. As a marathoner his top achievement was winning the 1921 Boston Marathon. He also finished second in the 1923 Boston, which led to his 1924 Olympic selection, and third in 1925 at Boston.
