Biography

Anna Maria Cantù was born in Cremona but, when she was a child, moved to Torino with her parents. Sports enthusiasts, they registered her with the Real Gymnastics Society, but they soon saw her aptitude for athletics and enrolled her in the club Sip Torino, where she began to compete on the track. She later joined Venchi Unica, and also worked part-time in their confectionery firm.

Cantù was Italian Champion at 200 metres and the 4x100 relay in 1946-47. She was a good curve runner, and was better in the 200 than the 100, and thus usually ran the third leg of the relay. She won six international caps with the Azzurri team from 1946-48. After retirement from competition, she lived in Torino until her death at 84-years-old.

Personal Best: 100 – 12.4 (1948).
