Mario Albertini began swimming as a youth in the Ticino River near Pavia. He was chosen for the 1906 Intercalated Games after the Roma trials were cancelled because the Tevere River was too cold. Albertini was a four-time Italian champion from 1902-06 in the nautical mile while representing Rari Nantes Pavia.
