Andrea Ehrig won seven Olympic speed skating medals – one gold, five silver, one bronze. After starting with a silver in 1976, she failed to win a medal in 1980 but won her only gold in 1984 at her favorite distance of 3,000 metres. She ended her Olympic career in 1988 with silvers in the 3,000 and 5,000 metres and a bronze in the 1,500 metres. Primarily a distance skater, Ehrig set world records over the three distances at which she won Olympic medals.
Her first Olympic appearance, when only 15 years old, was under her maiden name of Mitscherlich. She later competed under her married name of Schöne and following her second marriage in 1985 to fellow Olympic speed skater Andreas Ehrig, she made her final Olympic appearance under that name. She also earned two gold and four silvers at World Championships.
