Andreas Ehrig

East German speed skater Andreas Ehrig had his most successful season in 1984. After a fourth place at the European Championships (his best in six attempts) and a fourth (5,000 m) and fifth (1,500 m) place at the Sarajevo Olympics, he claimed a silver medal in the World Allround Championships. Most of his earlier successes were at the national level, winning the GDR allround title twice (1981-82) and earning titles in all classical distances: 500 m (1979), 1,500 m (1979), 5,000 m (1984) and 10,000 m (1979-80).

After the Sarajevo Olympics, he was briefly married to his teammate Andrea Ehrig-Schöne-Mitscherlich Ehrig later studied sports science and became a well-known and much respected sports scientist at IAT Leipzig (Institut für angewandte Trainingswissenschaften), mainly in the field of speed skating.
