Susan Patterson started on the US National B Team in 1971 but soon moved up to the A Team. She skied at the 1974 World Championships for the US. Her best season was 1975 when she won an international slalom race in Stevens Pass, Washington, and placed third in slalom at the US National Championships. She had six top 10s in World Cup races.
Patterson later married Ned Gillette, who was a cross-country skier and well known for his mountain climbing exploits, which included climbing Mt. Everest in May 1992. Patterson also joined him in some of his climbs. In August 1998, Gillette and Patterson were climbing in Pakistan at the base of Laila Peak in the Haramosh Valley. While in their tent, they were the victims of a robbery attempt, and were shot several times. Patterson survived but her husband was killed.
